Born on February 25, 1917, Anthony Burgess was the second child to be born to Elizabeth and Joseph Wilson. He lived the first four months of his life in Manchester, England, with his family, until his mother and sister died in 1918, from a flu epidemic. His aunt believed he needed a woman's figure in his life, so she raised him until his dad remarried a few years later. For many who grew up during the Great Depression, religion was a huge aspect of life. Anthony Burgess’s life was no exception, he was raised as a roman catholic-whose heritage goes back many centuries- and attended Bishop Bilsborrow school as a child.

While there his first wife was horribly beaten, and raped, which lead to her having a miscarriage. It was hard new for Burgess who was many miles away, and unfortunately, Burgess was not very popular amongst his peers so he didn't have much support through this depressing time. Fortunately, his correctional officers admired his hard work, and in 1942, he was promoted as a sergeant and was transferred into the Army Educational Corps. He started writing as a hobby because he believed there was no money involved, that was until his books became popular. He wrote his first book at the age of thirty two, and published his first novel at thirty nine. He adopted the pen name Anthony Burgess, which included his first name and his mother's maiden name, and he would also write under Joseph Kell time to time.

Burgess was fascinated with different cultures, especially the Malayan culture. He taught himself the Malayan language and got so well at it that he became fluent. Burgess was also interested in other languages and became fluent in a total of 6. In many of his books he uses slang terms for different languages, and even provides a dictionary in the back of the books.

Anthony Burgess, died on November 22, 1993 as a multi millionaire. Throughout his life he made a career out of composing novels, playwrights, translating different languages, and teaching literature. He wrote a total of thirty-three novels, twenty-five non-fiction pieces, three symphonies, and more than one hundred and fifty other musical works. His least favorite book, A Clockwork Orange, ironically became the most successful. It received many awards, such as winning a booker prize, and was noticed by the Modern Library on their top 100 best English
