Absolutely, William and Mary are the antitheses of an absolute monarchy. In fact, they are a considered a constitutional monarchy. Markedly, a constitutional monarchy is one that limits the powers of the leader/leaders and promotes the strict adherence to a written constitution. In light of the fact that Mary’s father James ll was becoming similar to an absolute monarchy when he tried to eliminate “The Act of Habeas Corpus” which in effect gives citizens the right to not be jailed unless they had committed a specific crime. For this and other reasons, James ll was overthrown and the English Parliament offered the throne to his eldest daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange.
