In Virginia Woolf’s novel To the Lighthouse James is the youngest of the Ramsay’s children and bares the closest relationship with his mother, Mrs.Ramsay. The language that is portrayed between Mrs. Ramsay and James seems a bit odd for something a six year old child would say. James appears to have an Oedipus complex, which is described by two situations. What had happened when the trip had first been canceled and after ten years when Mr.Ramsay finally takes James to the lighthouse. This would become the resolution of James Oedipus complex. James had been very excited to go on the trip with his mother to the lighthouse. Mr. Ramsay says that the weather would not allow it and that they would not be able to go. James growing resentment for his father is very odd for a child, because it is not the stubbornness or resentment you receive from children, he truly hates his father and believes his mother is, “ten thousand times better than he was” (Pg. 10). James is very much like his father which is in part of the reason that he cannot stand his father. Ramsay, always spew without regard for anyone else’s feelings. Mrs.Ramsay as a way of telling Mr. Ramsay that she love him without having to say it, has to break the bad news to James that the weather would not allow for the trip to the lighthouse. This dose of reality from his mother is infuriating and only continues to make his hate for his father grow. She had fallen into the trap of feeding Mr. Ramsay’s ego and thus hurting James who had been crushed to hear that they would not be going to the lighthouse.
