He was murdered by some of the members of the James-Younger gang. He was sitting in a chair when he was shot in the skull and the bullet went through his skull into the wall behind him. He died instantly once he was shot and then his comrades left the house. The two members of the gang shot him because they were tempted by a reward for Jesse. They wanted Jesse dead or alive but to save the two gang members the trouble they simply shot him in the head to silence him.
