Before the 19th century, English was not considered a discipline and the purpose of it is still debated. Throughout the years, new cultural, social, and philosophical trends have influenced the way English is taught and studied. During module 1, different videos were shown, and several readings were assigned that helped me to relate all the material. In this synthesis essay, I will describe what I learned throughout the videos and the readings by making connections among them. In the videos, I could see the relationship and the change that English suffered throughout the years. By grasping concepts from early theorists, it helped understand their way of framing the world. In How to Tame a Wild Tongue by Gloria Anzaldua, the concept of language is tied to ethnic identity. There is an interconnection between language and identity. The attitude that members of the community where she lives have towards her way of speaking (Chicano Spanish) is highlighted. This results in harmful effects that impact her identity as well as the one of the Chicano citizens that live in the borders. It is clear that there is a totally different understanding of the world and by focusing on the context-centered lens, racism concepts are expressed in the text. Chicanos born in America were separated from the other American citizens. They were scorned if their native language was spoken in class. This resulted in a disinterested students who usually have personality confusions because their language was wrong (Anzaldua, 39). Language is associated to culture; when there is a language difference, it can affect the person’s cultural identity. However, I believe that differences in the language should not influence the inner identity to be accepted in a group. On the other hand, Mentoring Midcareer Colleagues written by Jean Ferguson Carr reflects the importance of having a mentor who helps other colleagues to understand the structure of the institution, to consult a new syllabi and new projects, to explore new teaching methods among others. There is a comparison among graduate students, newly and midcareer faculty members who may feel that they cannot have a balance between their personal life and work. Mentoring is a reciprocal act in which colleagues of all ages and ranks should take care of each other’s wellbeing. There should be a careful attention towards the other person so the relationship can be sustainable and productive (Carr 2020).
