"Appropriating Native American Imagery Honors No One but the Prejudice" by Amy Stretten shows the art of a woman who honored her culture and race and refused to continue being offended by a mascot. The essay is to target those in the community that feels offended of what may be occurring in their school also. Student's in the community are the ones who mostly have an opinion in what is hurting them and causing distress at school. This essay uses various techniques to prove its opinions towards how offensive a person may feel toward a mascot. Examples of these type of various techniques come out as ethos, pathos, and logos. Anyone would be offended towards knowing that their race, culture or heritage is being talked down on. On the other hand, pathos explains to the reader information using emotion. In the essay, Amy Stretten informs us on how she uses pathos in this quote " I guess I thought if I made it known that I felt appropriating Native American imagery was offensive, they’d stop. I was outnumbered, though, and my personal feelings didn’t matter" (Stretten). One would feel engaged knowing that their culture is being talked down on and uses emotion for others to get affianced to what is being said. Lastly Stretten, provides us with the example of logos to help us understand the reasons why this an outrageous event should be looked at. “ Native American and Alaskan Native youth have the highest rates of suicide-related fatalities, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The lack of positive images of Native Americans doesn’t help self-esteem” (Stretten).The absence of having a poor image on your culture makes one feel worthless of themselves. Having to feel worthless of yourself leads to depression which also takes the lead in trying to cause yourself harm and suicidal
