Brief Summary and Arrangement of the Book: The book 1776 by David McCullough is about the first year of the Revolutionary War. It depicts the hardships that the Americans faced early on in the war; deserters, being outnumbered, disease, inexperience, feelings of hopelessness and countless other things. Everyone thought that the “rebellion” was a lost cause because they were a ragtag group of men going up against the most powerful nation at the time. Although they were successful as the war was starting things went downhill for the Americans. For almost four months in every battle fought the British came out victorious:the Battle of Long Island, Fort Washington and Fort Lee.
America’s battle for independence was a long, hard-fought war that began even before the American Revolution. Since the Sugar Act of 1764, America had shown signs of rebellion, each outburst getting worse as tensions rose between the Colonies and Britain. The novel 1776, by David McCullough, takes off in 1775, just after the Revolutionary War has begun. Closely following Washington, the novel takes the reader to the trenches to experience their losses, retreats, stalemates, and glorious victories. McCullough covers a wide variety of themes, ranging from military tactics, to the core government behind British Society.
“Bang!” “Bang!” I am in the middle of the Revolutionary War! The two novels being compared and contrasted are Two Kinds Of Patriots by Lucy Jane Bledsoe and My Brother Sam Is Dead by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier. The topics to be discussed are the religion, politics, and the conflicts.
In the article “A Warm, Clear Day in Dallas,” Marta Randall made it clear that there were several moods on this day. A few of the many moods were warm, and furious. For example, one of the moods is warm, in Paragraph 2 Randall notes “But this afternoon the crowd seemed friendly.” This quote means that people were warm and friendly, in Paragraph 1 Randall also notes “It was a clear, brilliant autumn day, and the crowds in the street below cheered and waved as President John F. Kennedy’s limousine passed by.”
In the book,My Brother Sam is Dead, there are two main people with opposite views on the revolutionary war. Tim, Sams brother, and their father Life. Sam has decided to fight for the American army, but his tory father disapproves. Life has had experience with war and has an idea of what will happen. In his mind the outlook is a dead son, a huge debt, and a lot of tears.
The first chapter of 1776 sets a fascinating backdrop for the rest of the book. The opening quote by George Washington exudes a foreboding mood- “The reflection upon my situation and that of this army produces many an uneasy hour when all around me are wrapped in sleep.” The portrayal of both the “English regulars” and the “American rebels” sides were well balanced and realistic. The author, David McCullough, portrays King George III as a good leader, albeit slightly disconnected from his people.
1776 is a narrative story that tells about the years that changed American history forever. McCullough covers all of the struggles and battles we had to go through in this war and focuses on the events of 1776. From the early losses at the Battle of Long Island to very important victories at places like Trenton and Princeton. McCullough paints a picture of what George Washington and his troops went through, but does so that a reader who has never experienced anything like it before can understand. The book talks about the political, military, and personal dynamics that changed the outcome of the revolution, highlighting the determination, sacrifices, and ingenuity of the patriots.
In An Hour Before Daylight, Jimmy Carter reflects upon his life as he grew up in rural Georgia. The memoir highlights the people who helped shape his life while he was attending school and working on his family’s farm. Throughout An Hour Before Daylight, Carter conveys the idea that racism is a learned behavior by utilizing regional dialect, vivid imagery, and unforgettable experiences to create tone and structure that allow the audience to truly understand what it was like to live in the South while segregation still existed. Within each chapter, Carter uses regional dialect to develop realistic characterizations of people who played a significant role in his upbringing.
The book I read was The Girl I Used To Be By April Henry. To summarize the book it is about a small family of three whose Christmas tree hunt becomes a horrific event. Ariel was three years old when her mother was killed and the suspected killer was her father. She was dropped off at Walmart by the killer and her father disappeared. His truck was soon found at the airport.
The majority of people during the American Revolution fought for liberty without realizing the actual cost and brutal reality of war. In the novel My Brother Sam is Dead, the Meeker family consisting of a Father name Life, a Mother named Susannah, a rebellious teen named Sam, and a conflicted teen named Tim, journey through the life of colonists owning a tavern during the Revolutionary War. Sam departs from his family to fight alongside the Patriots going against his Father, a Tory. War brings a lot of terrible things, but some examples are families splitting, clash of generation, and an overall theme of principle vs reality. The soldiers who fought in the war thought they were fighting for liberty, when really they caused havoc and awfulness.
By using outsider’s perspectives in the novel Broken April, Ismail Kadare, the author, displays how life in the HP and Kanun is so disconnected from the rest of the world and gives insight into the social norms and violent culture. These perspectives are employed to give a view into the author’s own perspective on the harsh culture. Via characters like Bessian and Diana, the readers are shown the wide range of outlooks into the HP culture. Other than that, the Doctor and Surveyor are used to show their long-lasting effect on the culture. Kadare using these perspectives helps the readers understand the HP much better, as it gives them a point of view in which they can relate.
