Mali was an Islamic kingdom during the Middle Ages in West Africa. This was caused by Principle of Culture 9 (“Culture is changed by inside and outside forces.”) This was because outside forces or traders would come to trade and tell them about Islamic ways. An inside force that changed them was a king named Mansa Musa who was the first king to push Islam and its culture in Mali. Mali was Islamic because the people of Mali valued the religion and Mali was influenced by Islamic architecture and arts.
This summer I went on a mission trip with my church to Cuba for one week. We visited our companion church which is located in Los Arabos, It is four hours away from Havana. While we are in Los Arabos the people of the community were nice enough to let us live in their homes for a week. This was my second year going and it was a lot of fun helping the people and giving back to the community. Los Arabos is the complete opposite of Havana, its more farm land and open greenery while Havana is more touristy.
In Araby the narrator is in love with the sister of his friend. For a while the young narrator stares through his window and admires the young girl, then one day she speaks to him (Joyce in Gardner, Lawn, Ridl, & Schakel, 2013, p.109) they finally share more than two words. She asks if he is going to the bazaar he replies yes and promises to bring her a gift. This event leads him to believe that they have a chance. The narrator then describes his “lack of focus at school” (Joyce in Gardner, Lawn, Ridl, & Schakel, 2013, p.110) leading up to the event.
The short story, “Araby,” was written in 1905 by Irish author James Joyce. It was later published in 1914 in a collection entitled The Dubliners which included fifteen stories portraying the life of the Irish middle class in and around Dublin in the early 1900s (Gray). “Araby” is a young boy’s narration of his fascination with his friend 's older sister. He takes every opportunity to watch her from his own house, and “When she came out on the doorstep my heart leaped. I ran to the hall, seized my books and followed her” (Joyce 1).
In October 1905, James Joyce wrote “Araby” on an unnamed narrator and like his other stories, they are all centered in an epiphany, concerned with forms of failures that result in realizations and disappointments. The importance of the time of this publication is due to the rise of modernist movement, emanating from skepticism and discontent of capitalism, urging writers like Joyce to portray their understanding of the world and human nature. In Araby, by James Joyce, the author's intended message of innocence is losing it through dramatic events and it's conveyed through characterization. The author uses the boy's thoughts to help emphasize the main idea of the story. In Araby, Joyce talks about the stereotypical boy who goes through his first phase of liking a girl.
“Araby” is a coming of age story written by James Joyce, set in Dublin, Ireland, at the beginning of the 20th century. Joyce uses a person vs. society formula as the central conflict of the story in which a naïve boy learns the difference between the fantastical nature of boyish love and the actuality of the real world. It is these two opposing perceptions that lead to the story’s central idea that adolescents acquire maturity through the forfeiture of innocence. Through the use of richly crafted settings, Joyce accentuates the narrator’s fumbling, first foray into adulthood.

The stories displayed quite a variety of themes including, betrayal, regret and life and death, just to name a few. However, epiphany is considered the major and most important theme in James Joyce’s stories. Therefore, in this essay, we’ll see how epiphany affected the characters in both stories.
The Two Major Themes in “Araby” James Joyce’s “Araby” depicts two excellent examples of themes that are becoming of age and going on a quest. The short story takes place in the late nineteenth century in Dublin, Ireland. Araby also shows how life was like for kids during that time period. The story follows the life of a young boy that goes on a quest for his crush, and realizes the harsh reality of getting older.
Araby explores the story of an unnamed young boy who seeks to escape the suppression of spirit his monotonous life has caused. The young boy’s only beacon of light in a dreary house in Dublin is his infatuation with his friend’s sister. He attempts to escape his paralyzing reality with the dreams of her, “Her image accompanied me even in places the most hostile to romance” (27). It is critical to note that most of the events in the story take place in the boy’s mind. Joyce employs interior monologue where he uses first person point of view to reveal the boy’s inner thoughts and feelings concerning his situation.
Also through Salwa’s grandmother who tells a traditional Palestinian children’s tale entitled “Nus Nsays” , Halaby made a dialogic relationship between the novel and the Arabic culture, when Salwa asks her grandmother why Nus Nsays is so small, her grandmother responds, “To show that with determination and a clever wit, small characters can defeat larger evils. Every Palestinian has a bit of Nus Nsays within him or her” (98). The Arab World Different people around the world have different standards and personalities. The same thing applies to different cultures in which every culture has its own way in dealing with things. An example of totally two different cultures is the Western culture and the Arab culture. Many differences can be easily recognized between these two different cultures. An author named Edward T. Hall wrote an article that shows how these two cultures behave differently under the same conditions.
In the article, “The Arab World", anthropologist Edward T. Hall discusses how Arabs have a different concept of space and boundary than westerners for public and private places and how this can help explain certain aspects of how Arabs behave. As a renowned anthropologist who has written prolifically and has conceived several important theories in anthropology, Hall is quite qualified to write on the topic of cultural differences and his propositions might be considered extremely credible. Despite possessing such qualifications and writing a well-organized and logical essay, Hall’s arguments in the article are quite lacking because of a biased tone, a lack of evidence, an overreliance on ethos and the use of some logical fallacies. The article basically tries to ascertain how and why Arabs behave differently than people from the west based on “proxemics research”.
