Other than to demonstrate their intense hatred for the Austrians, Serbia had absolutely nothing to gain in killing Franz Ferdinand. Serbia had already been semi-independent from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and had a stable economy. Therefore, provoking a greater military power would not have been in their best interests.
