Art has been existing since the early ages of human history. Even from the age where people painted in cave walls, art is seen as ritualistic. If art is ritualistic, then there is a religious aspect in the arts. Just like what Neumann explains in his writing, “Art and Time,” art has always been numinous. There is a collective consciousness and unconsciousness in our minds that is a symbolic expression of numinous (Neumann). In every piece of art, it is basically the same story but expressed in a different way, hence there are archetypes in art. Through the arts, you can see that religion plays a role, as there is always a higher being or divinity that the art is trying to express. It somewhat looks like a different planet from outer space since there are distorted objects floating in the air. At the same time, it could also be representing the deep ocean, since there are green little worm-like objects on the bottom, that could be seaweed. There is also a shell-looking object that could possibly be represented as a home. Tanguy’s art piece could be part of what Neumann explains about the cultural canon, and how different culture has a different view of expressing something (Neumann). Tanguy could be expressing an ultimate reality in this painting in his own cultural perspective. However, just like how Neumann explains it, although it can be represented differently, all aspect of art is related and is expressing the same bigger concept. In this case, it would be the ultimate reality or higher divine being. Personally, I would say that this piece can be considered expressionism because of how distorted the figures all seem. This is because “ultimate reality appears ‘breaking the prison of our form’...it breaks to pieces the surface of our own being and that of our world” (Tillich 232). As Tillich says, in Storm- Black Landscape, it is clear that Tanguy painted everything distorted and there is no figure what is completely formed.
