After being diagnosed with terminal cancer, mercenary and former Special Forces operative Wade Wilson is offered the chance of an experimental treatment that will not only cure the disease, but give him superhuman powers. He accepts, but the treatment disfigures him and the scinetist who changed him tries to kill him. So he retreats from the world and his girlfriend, stitches together a red and black suit and takes the name Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and twisted sense of humour, he sets out to hunt down the man who almost destroyed his life.

Former special effects whizz Tim Miller makes his feature debut with a superhero story that is very definitely for adults. You get the measure of the movie from the opening credits, which refer …show more content…

Deadpool is written as a smug, sarcastic anti-hero who is well aware that he lives in a comic book (hence his habit of addressing the audience directly). He’s flippant, immature, puerile and by rights, he should be absolutely insufferable, but perhaps because a fair number of his acerbic quips are aimed at himself and the actor playing him, he manages to be likeable. His girlfriend Vanessa is equally tough, mouthy and cynical, matching him line for sarcastic line (they even spend part of their first date competing for who had the worst childhood). So she doesn’t feel like simple arm candy or a damsel in distress. Weasel is Deadpool’s best mate and comedy sidekick, whose main purpose seems to be puncturing his friend’s over-inflated ego. Bad guy Ajax is the result of a super soldier programme that has left him unable to feel pain. Nevertheless, the smirking sadist allows the main protagonist to get right under his skin, leading to a series of increasingly irritable face-offs. He is abetted in his endeavours by near-silent henchwoman Angel Dust. Negasonic Teenage Warhead is written as a deadpan, moody super-powered teen, who remains thoroughly immune to the hero’s putdowns and showing off. Colossus is a neat comic creation. He may be a man-mountain apparently made of metal, but he defies expectation by being an earnest, soft-hearted do-gooder, who is keen to …show more content…

The motor-mouthed Canadian shows off his comic chops, as he rattles through quips and put-downs with alacrity, nailing the gags and moving on. But in spite of the rampant sarcasm, he still manages to be likeable. He is also pretty limber when it comes to the fight scenes. Morena Baccarin is more than a match for him as Vanessa. She’s funny, warm, smart and sexy, giving as good as she gets and sharing palpable chemistry with Reynolds. British rapper Ed Skrein isn’t a great actor by any stretch of the imagination, so his performance as bad guy Ajax lacks nuance. But he can snarl and sneer and does well in the fight sequences and that’s enough to get him through the role. TJ Miller adds more comic relief as Wade’s bar-owner friend Weasel, with what I suspect are mainly adlibs. Brianna Hildebrand plays Negasonic Teenage Warhead as a scornful, cynical young superhero who is determinedly unimpressed by Deadpool’s sarcasm and showboating shenanigans. MMA star Gina Carano appears as Ajax’s head henchwoman Angel Dust. She is more than capable of looking mean and beating people up, which is all the part requires of her. Leslie Uggams is good value as Blind Al, Deadpool’s cantankerous, foul-mouthed elderly housemate. Stefan Kapicic is the voice of Colossus and makes the metallic man-mountain sound like an Eastern European
