Since the lightning rod is meant to protect him, he must have a morbid death wish. Later in the chapter, it gives a reason as to why he might have this death wish because it says that Jim’s mother has a face “that had been hit a long time ago.

Arnold Friend, an ingenuine and strange character, pulls Connie away from her infantile fantasies to the grave reality of being an adult woman. Henry is one of these people. Using symbolism and foreshadowing within the story, “The Red Convertible” by Louise Erdrich portrays a few motifs throughout the story and these include the bond of brotherhood, sacrifice, and the effects of war.

Phoenix experiences many obstacles that do not interrupt her trip, but rather make her a stronger woman for overcoming them. In A Worn Path, Welty illustrates her journey through several key symbols: the name Phoenix, the path, and the windmill. Phoenix shares a name with a creature which reflects her indefatigable nature, her constant striving towards her goal, as well as her unflagging optimism and high spirits (Goodman).
In Joyce Carol Oates’ short story “Where Are You Going? All which is vital for her growth and wellbeing as a person.
In John Updike’s “A&P” and Joyce Oates’s “Where are you going, where have you been” there are multiple intriguing similarities and differences between both protagonists. Both stories involve an adolescent 's main character who goes through a type of struggle, however, the severity of their struggles differ greatly. “A&P” includes a young man named Sammy who loses his job grows an attachment to a small group of girls that are regular customers at the shop he works at. The situation in “Where are you going, where have you been?” is much more grim for the protagonist, a young teenage girl, Connie. She is put into a set of circumstances that put her life in danger.
Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott focuses on four sisters; Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy March that are a part of a very poor, humble family. While their father is off at war, they are left with their loving mother at home encouraging them to be a better person and the better version of themselves. As all four girls go through love and loss, they discover that they are truly brave and courageous. One very important major event was when the March sisters struggle to improve their various flaws as they grow into adults. Jo dreams of becoming a great writer and does not want to become a conventional adult woman.
