Daniel Mendez 9th Grade 2/4/2023 Through the Tunnel outline Throughout the story “Through the tunnel” the author shows evidence by the similes, symbols, and settings that young jerry tries hard to fit in. Firstly, setting for “Through the Tunnel” is jerry and his mother on a beach vacation and the story uses setting to help add an idea of what the conditions are like when Jerry has fun but also where he tries to fit in with the older boys and step into manhood. Ex 1: The safe beach is where the story begins but soon Jerry (the main protagonist) decides that the safe beach “it was not his beach.” Ex 2: The wild bay is not as safe, but Jerry seems to think that this is the far more exciting one and cannot wait to go down and play. Ex 1: The tunnel is used as a symbol of a gateway into Jerry’s manhood. Ex 2: The nose bleeds that Jerry experiences can be an indication that what he is training for is dangerous and a side effect to holding his breath for so long is the continuous bleeds. Ex 3: after working so hard to stay under water for at least 2 minutes his arm is turned brown symbolizing his dedication and the amount of time he has spent training. Finally, as Jerry is still a child he is still immature and young this is why he wants to fit in with the older boys because he sees them as men and longs to be like them and fit in. Ex 1: When Jerry first visits the wild bay, he swims far out when looks back in search of his mother when he sees her he describes it as “a slice of an orange peel” and as he is still a child being only 11 he wants to make sure she is still there and he is relieved when he sees her but also feels a sense of loneliness when he gets back to
