Iron Thunder By Avi Tom Carroll is a thirteen year old boy from Brooklyn. He lost his father in the Civil War. Now he live with him mother. His mother is becoming old and can’t take care of the family anymore.
My book Kid Owner by Tim Green is about a kid named Ryan who loves football. Ryan’s mom doesn’t agree with Ryan about football. Ryan wants to play football but Ryan’s mom wants him to keep playing soccer. Ryan’s never met his father and when Ryan’s father had passed away he had left Ryan the Dallas Cowboy’s. Ryan somehow has to find a way to keep the team.
Cry Liberty: The Great Stono-River Slave Rebellion of 1739 was written by Professor Peter C. Hoffer, who taught as a historian at the University of Georgia. This novel is a brief, yet very informative piece of work that provides a re-examination of a series of incidents that occurred during the Stono Rebellion (which transpired on September 9, 1739). This rebellion manifested once a group of about 20 slaves had broken into a store alongside the Stono River, nearby Charles Town, which is now known as Charleston, South Carolina. The author did an excellent job recreating events in this book and developing the question of whether or not it was actually a rebellion.

I chose the Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt. The moral of this book is how it feels to have a school that is not normal, and have a teacher hate your guts. This book is about a seventh grader named Holling Hoodhood, and he goes around the school, acting serious about things. When things go downhill and all his classmates get mad at him, he tries his best to fix it. Mrs. Baker hated Holling, but then Holling acted like a friend to her, and the hate relationship was over.
In writing A Voyage Long and Strange, Tony Horwitz’s goal is clear, to educate others on early America and debunk ignorant myths. Horwitz’s reason for wanting to achieve this goal is because of his own ignorance that he sees while at Plymouth Rock. “Expensively educated at a private school and university- a history major, no less!-I’d matriculated to middle age with a third grader’s grasp of early America.” Horwitz is disappointed in his own lack of knowledge of his home country, especially with his background history and decides not only to research America’s true beginnings, but to also follow the path of those who originally yearned to discover America.
The book, Ghost, by Jason Reynolds is a story about a boy named Castle, but is called Ghost. Castle has a very rough life because his father is imprisoned and his mother struggles with finances. Castle is a misbehaved kid who struggles in school and makes a track team which motivates him to be good in school. Track played ended up playing a huge role in his life and went through the ups and downs with him. Track taught him respect and discipline which spread throughout his home.
World War II was a brutal time. Many innocent people were tortured, and this was a very real situation for the victims held captive in the Warsaw ghetto. Individuals were starved and put in a place of devastation and depression. Contributing factors, like sickness and disease, forced human beings to figure out ways to survive. In the book Milkweed by Jerry Spinelli, people used survival skills such as stealing and supporting the Jackboots.
How is it that two men that come from identical backgrounds end up being completely opposites? Wes Moore takes us back to his childhood growing up, and also introduces us to a character sharing the same name as him, and similarly, the same lifestyle. Both of the young men shared the absence of a father figure, living in poor neighborhoods, bad influences, and lack of education. While reading, we question “how?” and “why?”
The war can be seen in many different aspects, sometimes good most times not so good. The war past, present and future can be a hard topic for most. War novels, writing about the war, or even talking about the war can be very difficult for most people to talk and share their experiences. People are affected by the war in many different ways, and tend to deal with the affects differently. The effects on war not only affects the person who experienced the war hands on but also the people around them also.
Do you understand the feeling of being different? Ever feel those staring eyes peering into you like a laser beam because your not dressed like everybody else? Of course you have everyone has unless you live under a rock but anyway everyone has felt different but why the staring why do they have to make you feel alien? Well it’s simple some people just simply don’t like change and if you aren’t like everyone else the order of things might get screwed up. And when people feel their way of things is being tempered with they can get a bit extreme meaning you better prepare for the worst.
In this world, there’s learning things the hard way and the easy way; in Jeannette Wall’s world, there’s only learning things the hard way. The Glass Castle is an adventurous story that reveals the painfully miserable story of Jeannette Walls. A selfish mother, a careless father, and terrible social encounters- these are some of the elements of a harsh reality Rex and Rose Mary Walls failed to shield their children from. Growing up poor was already difficult, but growing up with a selfish parent, specifically an unfeeling mom, made life hell for the Walls children. The family barely had one source of income from Rex Walls, and instead of helping out with the family’s finance issues, Rose Mary spent her days at home painting.

Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Slaughterhouse-Five chronicles the life of Billy Pilgrim, a fictional character loosely based on Vonnegut’s own experiences in World War II. The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien’s fictional novel that is set during the height of the Vietnam War. Both authors incorporate fact and fantasy scenes in their writings, albeit in different contexts. Vonnegut’s novel travels throughout time and brings the reader to both non-fictional and fantastical scenes. Conversely, O’Brien’s novel is written in chronological order, but also incorporates fact and fantasy into the timeline of the story.
Dave Pelzer: A Child Called It The book that I have chosen to complete a book report about is called “A Child Called It.” The author’s name is Dave Pelzer. He wrote this book because he was abused and wanted to inspire many kids who are going through the same thing he went through.
