When watching movies or reading books, you may notice a pattern or similarity in the stories. This is called an archetype. The hero’s journey is one example. Authors have different ways of expressing their thoughts in their hero’s journey. The Hobbit is about the journey of Bilbo Baggins and 13 dwarves who journey to get their treasure back.
“Dances With Wolves” directed by Kevin Costner was released worldwide on November 21st, 1990 and won great praise for its story and characterization by critics. the movie was latter known as one of the best portrayal of Indian tribes and their perilous lives during the era of Civil War and development of the American Nation. The movie won majority of their accolades for their use of unique literary devices. Their execution of foster’s Archetypes were incorporated into the movie to signify the protagonists(John Dunbar) growth thru the film. The director/screenplay of the film connotes this idea by showcasing his quest for identity and his loyalty towards the Sioux.
The ability to trust others is a good quality to have, but too much trust can lead to betrayal which then can cause a change in someone. The dystopian novel Unwind by Neal Shusterman is about kids ages 13-18 trying to survive in a disloyal world from getting killed and stripped for body parts. In the novel The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey, there is an alien invasion where all the aliens manipulate all the human’s fears and weaknesses to eventually kill them off. Both authors of the stories use character archetypes and symbolism to indicate the theme that people who have been betrayed in the past, tend to change as a person whether the change is good or bad.
In The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien, The dwarves portray the hunting group of companions archetype because they helped Bilbo by leading the way around, they made Bilbo feel comforted by singing for him and they protected Bilbo throughout the novel. The hunting group of companions are loyal companions that will risk their lives to protect someone or a group of people. The dwarves are this archetype because companions lead the way for someone that they care about. The dwarves took Bilbo back home without getting lost.

Everyone can relate to an archetype character in a movie, book, or television show. An archetype meaning to me is when a character can resemblance a certain topic. Example of common archetypes would the following a hero, caregiver, damsel in distressed, lover, villain, or tragic hero. In the play, The Crucible, we learned that some of the characters had common archetypes. This was a tragic play which means it has a tragic hero.
In the movie Into the Woods, the writer and director changed Rapunzel from being scared of the witch to being brave in the movie when the witch came to meet her in the castle she was trapped in. “You are not leaving this tower EVER!”. This quote from the Witch proves to the audience that she is a damsel because she is very helpless and has no way out of her misery. Not just that but it also shows she has a very evil stepmother who is torturing her and is the one who has made this mess in her life.

When his family decides to sell the zoo and move to Canada, the freighter they travel in breaks down and sinks. Luckily, Pi gets on a life boat just in time but weirdly enough, with four zoo animals who were also in the freighter.

The idea is very similar to the Hero’s Journey, except it is a similarity in characters oppose to storyline. He saw common characters such as the “Hero” . To analyse the hero archetype, we must first look to Greece and the poet Homer. An archetype is a pattern of behavior that can help us understand ourselves and others. To have a greater understanding of myself, I recognized the person archetype of a student within myself and the archetype of a journey throughout my four years in high school. These archetypes helped me throughout high school and helped me gain knowledge that I can apply throughout my life. My first archetype is one that many people experience within their life, a student. Everyone in their life has learned something either by learning from others or from themselves (Archetypes, Intellectual archetypes).
