Imagine living in a world where you are paid to compete in an activity that you adore at a young age. Ever since I can remember, sports have been a major part of who I am. Never did the thought cross my mind of receiving a salary before making it your career. After researching the topic, authors such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Ryan Swanson, and Ekow Yankah all represent different viewpoints on the controversial topic whether or not college athletes should be paid. Major football and basketball programs are the only ones which make millions of dollars every year. So, only football and basketball players from major programs deserve to get paid, but this is not fair. It would be unreasonable to the other athletes to only pay football and basketball players because they put in just as much work as football and basketball players. All sports programs have a similar schedule, and they are all demanding.
Another valid argument for why they deserve to be paid is because a scholarship for the athletes doesn 't normally cover all of the tuitions. So the players are forced to pay the rest of the tuition to go there and play. Not everybody can afford to pay for college that is why they work their butt off for a scholarship. A case happened at duke university where a player got a scholarship and still had to pay 1,995 dollars for his scholarship. The study shows that the players were living just 732 dollars above the poverty line.

There are numerous sources illustrating pros and cons regarding whether or not college athletes deserve to be paid. Some argue that athletes should be paid because they are forced to endure unhealthy environments and unfair treatment, struggle through the “plantation system”, want support for themselves, etc. Opposers of this argument state that athletes should not be paid because of financial irresponsibility, education equaling money, university offering more than education, loss of passion for the game, etc.

College athletes put in a lot of time, effort, and work into the sport they’ve played since they were young, but they aren’t getting paid for it. These student athletes deserve to be paid because they put in countless hours of hard work and balance sports with school work. The first reason athletes in college do deserve to be compensated is because they don 't have time to fit in work with a school and athletic schedule. College athletes don’t have time to get a real job. Student athletes have a very busy schedule, they don’t have time to fit in a job.

A growing debate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association is whether or not student athletes should be paid. The controversy began in 2011 after three hundred coaches and athletes signed a petition to pay college-level athletes, and since then other athletes have made several more arguments. The NCAA has rightfully denied all of the requests, saying they include too much. To pay student athletes could be hugely expensive for colleges, especially because they would not only pay for each athlete’s degree and equipment, but also provide a salary and give bonuses revenue for tournaments. Moreover, college athletes should not be paid because there is not enough money, it takes away a student’s focus from schoolwork, and not every athlete is guaranteed a professional career after graduating; however it is argued that it they are already paid in a way.
