Many people have heard, if not read The Commedia by Dante Alighieri. Completed in 1320, The Commedia, better known as The Divine Comedy, is broken into three sections, Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso, and then again broken into smaller sections called Cantos. Written in poem style, The Commedia can be heavy and hard to understand. With many contemporary political issues, heavy theological thought, and renaissance culture it is easy to get lost in this work; but, why was this work written? With the theological and political side, what was Dante trying to convey to his audience? With a deep history of political and theological ties, Dante’s works can be hard to decipher.
