Not your average breakfast egg, but women’s ovum. These are extremely important in this book, and come in play on almost every page. For starters, Claudia and Ben’s relationship end over them. Ben wants children, Claudia doesn’t. This tears their relationship apart and is the ultimate reason for their divorce. Claudia’s unfeigned distaste for having children is just too much for Ben. Furthermore, Claudia’s sister is infertile and has asked Claudia to donate one of her eggs. Claudia is not too keen on the idea, because it is a really big thing to ask for, and also because the baby would technically be hers, and she doesn’t want that. This is a huge thing to ask anyone for, and especially your sister; “’I don’t think it would be all that selfish to turn this request down. I mean, that’s a lot to ask’” (Giffin 203). Claudia doesn’t know what she wants to do. It is really hard to say no to her sister, especially since she has been trying to have a baby for years
