Many people throughout their lives at least once acted recklessly and irrationally to overcome challenges. Without thinking thoughtfully, the actions they performed may have harmed others or themselves. This is why the phrase, “think before you act” is created, to prevent others from performing tactless maneuvers to satisfy their challenges and emotions. In the novel, A Brave New World, Aldous Huxley suggests that individuals who act recklessly in the face of adversity will fail miserably; these reckless actions will cause despair and grief for the individual or others because of their lack of thinking and overwhelming of emotions. Linda, the mother of John, is a Beta back in the Capital before she is left behind in a village near the New Mexican Savage Reservation. Pregnant and could not return to the Capital to get an abortion, Linda had to give birth to a child named John. As someone who is from the Capital, Linda could not adapt to the society in the village since the rules and morals were very different—and because of this Linda wanted to return back to the Capital. Able to return to the Capital thanks to John and Bernard, Linda is really excited—since it is a taboo to have sex with anyone without mutual feelings and there wasn’t any soma in the village. Returned to the Capital things did not get any better for Linda; she is described by the people from the Capital as fat, ugly, dirty, and sinned since she gave birth. This caused Linda to fallen in depression, which made her refuse to go outside. Coop inside her room, she overdosed soma, which later made her very sick. In the end, Linda died because of overdosing soma causing John to be very depressed. Not understanding Lenina’s feelings, Linda’s death was the breaking point for John.
