Hammurabi once said, “If a man destroys the eye of another man, they shall destroy his eye.” This quote shows that if someone hurts you or your people you have the right to hurt them back. In the Sunflower by Simon Wiesenthal, Simon is a Jewish prisoner in a concentration camp. While he is working at a reserve hospital he meets a Nazi soldier named Karl that needs help. Karl had killed hundreds of Jews in a fire. Karl tells Simon about what he did and Karl asked for forgiveness. Simon thinks for a while and walks off without saying anything. Karl should not be forgiven because he did inhuman tasks like killing hundreds of Jews in a house that was burning. Karl also was selfish when he asked Simon to forgive him. This shows he is selfish because he wants to feel better about himself. Karl should not be forgiven because he is selfish. He was selfish when he wanted Simon to forgive him. Karl is badly injured and knows he won’t live. He asked Simon to forgive him for killing all the Jews. Simon thinks it over and leaves him. Karl said, “Those Jews died quickly, they did not suffer as I do” (Wiesenthal 52). Karl wants to die quickly instead of suffering. He thinks that The Jews should have suffered. This shows that Karl wants to die peacefully. He thinks if Simon forgives him he will feel better about himself and have a good death. Karl does not want to die feeling like a murderer. Karl has done tasks that he should not be forgiven for. He killed hundreds of Jews and was selfish when he asked Simon for forgiveness. People think that Karl should be forgiven because he did nice deeds like give food to the Jewish kids and other goods. The one thing I am focusing on is how he didn’t shoot at the Jews a second time. However I do not believe that he should be forgiven for not shooting the Jews a second time. Karl and other Nazi soldiers were assigned to shoot Jewish people. Karl said, “No I can not shoot at them a second time” (Wiesenthal 51). Karl did not want to shoot the Jews a second time because he knew it was wrong. He had to shoot at a line of Jewish people. He shot the first time but not the second. Some people think Karl should be forgiven for not shooting them a second time but I still would not forgive him. Finally forgiving someone is harder than forgiving someone. Simon did not forgive Karl because he burned down a house with hundreds of Jews and he was selfish when he asked for forgiveness. Through the book you can see that Simon is having trouble deciding to forgive or to not forgive Karl.It is not easy to not forgive someone who needs help. When you don’t forgive someone you have to take a step in their shoes and think of what they are going through. If you don’t forgive someone it can haunt you for the rest of your life and may affect how you see different objects and
