Sue Monk Kidd displays this with the imprisonment that Lily deals with throughout the book. While Lily does finds liberation at the end, she first had to break free from the imprisonments of her secrets, T-Ray, and the torment from killing her mother.
Throughout the duration of Sue Monk Kidd’s The Secret LIfe of Bees, the characters of her novel undergo various difficulties. The novel revolves around Lily as she learns about her past and tries to discover more about her long-dead mother. Additionally, the novel features extensive character interaction as Lily and her companion Rosaleen take residence at a farm in Tiburon, South Carolina, and meet three sisters: May, June, and August.
One could look at a bee hive as a single living entity (otherwise known as a Superorganism).They ingest and digest food,regulate water control and achieve locomotion as well as many other things that humans do to stay alive. This is were the similarities stop. Bees are raised for certain jobs that are never changed. Queens lay eggs,Drones mate with queens,and workers well….. They work.
When the challenges that people face become increasingly difficult, people tend to back down from the challenges that they encountered. However, there are some people who will rise to the occasion and do what is needed to be done to overcome those obstacles. Throughout the reading of La Línea, Maus, and The Secret Life of Bees, the same overlapping theme that only a few stand-up and overcome their problems remains constant. The book La Línea was the book with the largest variety of challenges ranging from strenuous physical activity to exhausting mental strain. Throughout the book it talks about how some people don’t try to leave, like Miguel's friend Chuy, “we all knew Chuy wasn't going anywhere”(Jaramillo 8).
In the novel Secret Life of Bees there are many characters with interesting backgrounds and unique characteristics. They each serve a purpose in the book to support the main character, push the character in a certain direction, and send a message to the readers. The character in the novel of Secret Life of Bees that Kidd makes me particularly admire is August Boatwright. August breaks the stereotype of black women in the South during this period. She lives in her own home with her two sisters and runs a successful business.
The Secret Lives of People The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd, is an interesting story that connects human lives to bees. The story takes place in 1964 during the Civil Rights Movement and fourteen year-old Lily Owens leaves her abusive father and her home in Sylvan, South Carolina to go to Tiburon with hopes to find information on her mother. Throughout the story, Lily struggles with many internal conflicts and also meets several mother figures along the way.
A World of Love “People, in general, would rather die than forgive. It’s that hard. If God said in plain language, ‘I’m giving you a choice, forgive or die,’ a lot of people would go ahead and order their coffin.” (Kidd 277) Rough times and struggles are simply a part of life- something everyone is to endure.
This again stops the bees from doing their job of pollinating and stops them from getting the food they need to survive. The community can help bees survive by employing a few tactics. One tactic alone will not cure the bee population degradation but it can help boost the bee population. One local and more personal tactic would be to have a “bee garden” that consists of flowering plants that bees like which include apples, oranges, lemons, limes, cucumbers, carrots, and cantaloupes. Another tactic would be do be more environmentally conscious.

“Beekeepers across the United States lost 44 percent of their honey bee colonies during the year spanning from April 2015 to April 2016” (“Nation’s Beekeepers lost 44 percent of bees in 2015-2016”). Many famers today plant their cops in sections farther apart depending on the plant. When the bees go to collect nectar they cannot get as much food without getting tired. This has had an effect on bees because they die faster from having to fly so far. Many beekeepers think that this reason causes bees to fade away.
Hazel Sillver says, “Honey bees are declining in population and may be facing extinction. This is bad not just for the bees, but also for humans, who rely on bees to pollinate many plants and important agricultural crops.” Without bees, crops cannot be pollinated, which stunts growth and can cause the crop to be uneatable or it could be left with very low nutrients. This novel took place in Sylvan and Tiburon, South Carolina, where Lily grew up and where she found the answer to her questions.

However, in Akeelah and the Bee, a young girl works toward her goal of winning the national spelling bee. Her persistence and heartwarming story entertain the audience while providing an inspiration for achieving goals.
