Pew! Pew! Pew! Pew! I’ve been playing video games ever since I was able to hold a Gameboy Advance. My favorite game, Pokémon Crystal. I remember being 5 years old beating the Elite 4 at least 3 different times that year. This game was only a precursor for the games I would play later on. It went from Super Mario on the Nintendo 64 to X-men on the GameCube. And today my Xbox and I have a date almost every night; we’re getting pretty friendly. I scream at it, it stares back at me, it’s a great relationship. However lately I’ve seen some articles and even books that depict video games as things used to distract us or rot people’s brains. We hold on to stress and anxiety instead of getting rid of it with enjoyment. Seven out of ten adults in the United States say they experience stress or anxiety daily, and most say it interferes with their lives as reported by the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA). Video games can provide that fun for us all. Or can be an escape from reality. When it was eight years old my parents went through many custody battles over my brother and me. Only being 8 I had no real clue what was actually going on in my house. My brother used to sneak me downstairs in the basement where we would plug in the GameCube or Nintendo. We would play Mario or X Men for hours at a time, and for those few hours I completely forgot about my yelling parents just upstairs. If video games can cure my sadness and confusion, think about what it could on a national level. If Democrats and Republicans sat down and played Battlefield, Smite, League of Legends, maybe even Sims they might actually get along. Or finally pass a useful Bill. Fun has become something we do only when we have time. But with video games there is always time. Trust the girl that has a date with her Xbox every night.
