When we look around us what do we see? Life, in all its wondrous glory. People with all of our unique cultures and customs that come with it. One does not need to be a student of the fine arts to realize this. Life is just like art with its many textures, colors, and styles to go along with it. And just as styles may change so do we as a people, a community, and as a country. Along with opinions about what is art and what makes it work, also comes opinions about what is this country, and what makes it work? Diversity in its people and the inevitable change that makes our nation. Naturally, there will be opposition to this kind of viewpoint. Diversity in some amounts might be acceptable to some. But what about whole neighborhoods and communities? Okay, that seems reasonable. How about the majority of the populace being the new minority in this country? That might be a shock for some and a bit much to take for others. This kind of dramatic change is seen as startling and uneasy. But why is it seen this way? Will we ever finally see a civilized society without hate, bigoted views, and prejudiced thinking? Unfortunately, not in our lifetime, but the children of today and tomorrow can help ease the anger and tension, and resolve what has been plaguing our nation for years. A sense of understanding. Unsure of what that means? Imagine the thought of any interracial couple from around say the year 1901, unheard of and even illegal. But today is as commonplace as there is rain.
