Hunger in America Around forty percent of food goes uneaten in the United States every year. Where does it go? In the garbage. The portion sizes in restaurants have gotten so big that people leave most of their food on the table to get thrown away. Many people who are food insecure actually don’t even have a job. How are the supposed to afford food when they can’t even afford the simple things like clothes to wear, or a house to sleep in. The last thing on their mind is where they are going to get these things at, citizens of the United States should not have to be worrying about where their next meal is coming from. When you are in need of food, that’s the only thing that is going to be on your mind. Not only is it unhealthy not to eat, eventually it becomes physically painful to go hungry for long periods of time. Unfortunately, a lot of children get one meal a day, which comes from school. Even school lunches are loaded with calories and barely nutritious now days. Let’s not forget about those who don’t even have a bed to sleep in at night, let alone have a pair of shoes on their feet. Nearly two thousand people can be homeless on any night in the United States. That’s nearly two thousand people who aren’t only homeless, but also food insecure. That’s two thousand people going hungry in America on any given night. There are nearly eight million people unemployed in the United States. That’s a whole lot of people who will if not already, eventually need some kind of assistance affording …show more content…

The amount of money provided depends on income. Money is granted at the beginning of every month. Most of the money is used up in the first two weeks of the month, leaving families eating cheap, calorie filled foods for the rest of the month. Which is basically the definition of food insecurity. On top of so many Americans depending on SNAP benefits, the money just doesn’t come out of the government fund, those are tax payers’ dollars going towards food for fellow citizens. If we would all just stop throwing away a ton of food, we can donate it to the needy, and we wouldn’t have so many Americans depending on taxpayers for their food supply that
