Is College Worth the Debt? There are many people in the world today who carry a large amount of student loan debt, sometimes more than $100,000, which may take them decades to pay off fully. Many today are debating that the education and degrees received in college are not worth a lifetime of debt. Some feel that they can find gainful and fulfilling employment without the need of a 4-year-degree. Others feel that having that college education is a greater guarantee of finding success in their chosen fields; it is imperative. They work to maintain high grades in order to gain acceptance and, possibly, scholarships in order to cover their college costs; then they must choose between junior colleges and universities and, today, online options (Ghose 1). They spend several years taking a large number of general education courses, like math and English, which may have nothing to do with furthering their education in their chosen specialty and major. This raises college costs by thousands. College is so costly it is inevitable that most students will have to take out some kind of student loan, which can lead to a lot of debt. This would be beneficial if the large debt would be reflective in their later economic and employment successes. However, that is simply not the case.
