In the state of Michigan on July 1st 2014 Michigan repealed appealed its licensing law. So, now it is legal to use nutritional tools in practice. In the past before the law was repealed, dietitians and nutritionists required an approved bachelor’s degree in an accredited university, completing 900 hours of post –degree work supervised by a licensed professional, and successfully completing an exam. Also, the person would pay an annual fee of $75 per year to the state and a $20 application fee.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics believes that this deregulation could do public harm. The Michigan Nutrition Association is against the strict licensing of dietitians and nutritionists. I think people should have the education and then be trained on the job. This would ensure that they understand what the job entails and provide them valuable experience, but being required to be licensed with its strict requirements does not help those who go to college for 4 years get their bachelor’s degree and can’t find a job because no one will hire them without a license.
