Gerald R. Ford once said “Music education opens doors that help children pass from school into the world around them - a world of work, culture, intellectual activity, and human involvement. The future of our nation depends on providing our children with a complete education that includes music.” Many people view music as less important than other school subjects and extracurricular activities, and therefore is typically the first thing to be cut from schools when financial issues occur. The recently aired show Rennervations sums this up really well. In the show, actor Jeremy Renner and his crew are renovating buses for different needs. In the first episode he is making a music bus for kids in Chicago because they need a place to go to get off of the streets. Jeremy Renner said “Music is a universal language that gives people an outlet. Music could help connect the community by engaging people from different neighborhoods.” He also said “It’s pretty inspiring, I think, music. And we all have different ties to music, right? But it’s… No matter of our race, color, creed, music is a uniting thing.” These quotes show that music education is important because it brings people together and doesn’t discriminate. One of Jeremy Renner’s crew members said “Jeremy taught my daughter how to play the piano and it’s made an enormous impact in her life. It’s just one of the extraordinary tools for kids to express themselves and to have a creative outlet.” This quote briefly mentions the point that music education is a great outlet for student to have. The last quote is one from Renner that covers many topics of music’s importance. “Music has always been my first love. It’s a very personal thing for me. Something that I fell into when I was younger. Kept me out of trouble, and becoming an adult, it still is. Anytime I get overwhelmed with personal problems or job, music is a therapeutic outlet for me. But I didn’t really share any music until even more recently in the last like five years or so. And in doing so, it opened my eyes and opened my heart. It gave me a sense of belonging. Music unites people. That to me is exciting.” This quote once again shows how important of an outlet music is for kids, as well as keeping behavior problems low.
