Baby Boomers The term Baby Boomer is used to describe somebody born after world war II, from 1946 – 1964. As soldiers returned home from the war, the rise in children born nine months later was astonishing. Most of them grew up in a household where the Dad/Husband worked and the Mother stayed home and took care of the kids. Consequently, many boomers got married and had children at a very young age. However, even though they married quickly, the marriages did not last. As the boomers grow older, technology is changing and is vital part of life in todays society. There are boomers who are easily trained on the new technology, and then there are those who believe technology is the spawn of Satan. Of those reasons are as follows; accessibility, safety concerns, not needed, the list goes on (The use and Disuse of Cell Phones). However, as time went on, the boomers became more accepting and adapting to the changes in the technology that was ahead (Technology and Baby Boomers). Boomers have lived through multiple era’s of technology. Taking a look at current technology, almost everybody has an iPhone. I know many different boomers who have them and have integrated cell phones into their daily lives. However, by the same token, I know many Boomers who did not wish to have a cell phone or even have a need for one. It is a catch twenty two, but it is important Retirement is a topic that all baby boomers should be considering at this point in life. Consequently, comes the more serious question; can you financially afford to retire? A typical rule for retirement is the “three leg stool” which is made up of social security, savings, and private pension. 1 in 5 Americans receive 90% or more of their retirement income from social security (Appelman et. al).
