Allowing Citizens to Carry Concealed Weapons Police Chief James Craig talks about Chicago needing more guns to reduce the crime rate. Furthermore, the host states that in the “end. the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun” (Woods, 2014). There are multiple studies that agree with this statement and show that more concealed weapons do deter crime. When a criminal believes that someone is carrying a weapon they would have less of a reason to after that person, and if that person did have a weapon and they pulled it the criminal would not be able to do much, and could possibly end up hurt or dead themself. According to Lott and Mustard (1997, p.1) allowing concealed weapons does not increase accidental deaths, but it does decreases violent crimes. So why would there be any reason not to allow concealed weapons? One of the biggest arguments is that concealed weapons increase the loss of innocent people’s lives, but Lott and Mustard’s research proves just the opposite. Furthermore, Paul Smith admits that “At the bitter end, the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun” (Woods, 2014). This is coming from a Detroit officer and a liberal news site, which makes it even more shocking because it is rare that either of those places agree with concealed weapons. People everywhere are beginning to realize just how important it is to allow citizens to carry concealed and protect themselves and their families. Vermont is one of the few states that does not require its citizens to obtain a permit in order to carry concealed (USA Carry, yyyy). Furthermore, Vermont has lowest total number of murders while California had the most in the year 2015 (statista).
