When the Declaration of Independence was in the process of being written, Jefferson and the men who revised the draft stated how “All men are created equal,” and that they had “certain unalienable Rights, that among those are life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” However, Jefferson and the men around him conveniently left out the underprivileged members of society, such as women, Native Americans, and those who were impoverished. They weren’t included in the Declaration of Independence, and they weren’t given the same amount of rights as the white, landowning men. According to Huffington Post, at least 15 Democratic Senators supported this bill, including Kamala Harris of California, which is a record level of support for a proposal of this type. This bill would impose a tax on everyone in order to make sure everyone got equal access to healthcare, including the richest 0.1 percent of Americans, who would receive a 1 percent tax. Senator Sanders’ new proposal represents what our founding ideals of freedom and equality should truly be like in America, since it provides everyone with an equal access to healthcare instead of charging outrageous prices when compared to other developed countries. It calls on all Americans, including the wealthiest 0.1 percent, to contribute in making sure that everyone receives equal rights to things such as healthcare. In this new bill, the richest of all Americans aren’t favored over the rest of the American people, which is an example of our founding ideals of freedom and equality for everyone, and not just the rich.
