Invented in the early 2000s, e-cigarettes intended to become a replacement for conventional cigarettes. Due to the proven health deficits of conventional cigarettes, e-cigarettes have become a safer alternative to smoking over the past two decades. However, there are still active debates about whether e-cigarettes are truly beneficial. Some argue that due to the relative safety of e-cigarettes to conventional cigarettes, alongside the economic benefits, e-cigarettes are fine. This led to a lawsuit that Juul lost, forcing it to pay $438.5 million, stop appealing to minors, stop funding education systems, and stop misinforming customers about the amount of nicotine in their products. Although $25 billion seems like a lot, the US generated $4.9 trillion in 2022. In the grand scheme of the economy, the market for e-cigarettes is quite small. If the e-cigarette market were to be shut down, however, it would place nearly 166,000 people out of their jobs. The US would need to find a way to make sure these people have the opportunity for other jobs. This would be through giving them new jobs directly or hooking them up with agencies to find them jobs.
