Children are pushed into adulthood by their parents to grow up and become adults at an early age. In today's society, parents perceive their children as adults and force the idea that there is no other way of living besides having a job to support yourself even if the job isn't your passion. In Fences, Cory has a chance to get into college by getting recruited by a football coach and potentially have a better future than Troy, because he would achieve a college degree. However, Troy, Cory's father takes that all away from him because Tory wants Cory to have a real job that can support him instead of having a “chance” of supporting himself. Growing up having a hard childhood can impact the future of parenting. During Fences, Tory shows how much affect his childhood has on him as a father. Cory, Tory son, has a chance of a future and he is going to be looked at by a recruiter for football but Tory doesn’t believe in chance which causes an arguments between the two which leads into a conversation on Cory asking Tory if he likes his son. Tory responds with “ It's my responsibility.. Not cause I like you.. I owe a responsibility to you” ( Wilson 1.3), this reflects the way Tory's father treated him when he was a child as a responsibility more than his child, which carried onto Tory with Cory. Imitating is an action of using someone or something as a role model such as the Tory father's treatment of Tory to his parenting of Cory. In “7 Ways Your Childhood Affects” by Laura Firestone, it talks about how once parents begin to have children is when “we fail to realize that we are hurting our children when we repeat the maladaptive treatment of our parents” (Firestone). Tory is failing to realize that he is treating Cory the exact same way as his father once did him. The way his father saw his children as a responsibility instead of being a loving dad, is now the only way of treatment Tory knows of because of how his father treated him. Throughout the book, baseball is a huge part of Tory life and not being given the chance to have his dream of playing baseball is another huge factor in his parenting. Tory can talk on and on about baseball but he was never given the chance to show his talent or even an opportunity to prove he was really something. Not being given the chance has affected his parenting of Cory. Cory finally has the opportunity to be recruited by a football coach for a chance of getting into college and getting a college degree but all Tory can think
