Danielle Jackson Carlton - 5 English 11 1 March 2018 The Broken System we call Foster Care Yes foster care is an essential system used to provide loving homes to children, but unfortunately these systems have become broken and can no longer keep kids safe under their care. Everyday children are being placed in foster homes facing abuse, unloving parents, and even death. The system has only progressively gotten worse leaving behind children traumatized to a point where no amount of love or therapy can fix them.
Overcrowding There are now more children in foster care and not enough families to look after them. In 2014, Quebec had 5744 foster families and 8523 children and adolescents in foster care. Since there are not enough foster homes, children are overcrowded in the available houses.

Note: I speak from experience as a hosting Foster family who have adopted two of the six residing minors we have received from the system. How many times have we heard the term 'Foster Care' in a positive way? Or maybe you've heard of the lion's den of 'Social Services' or the oh-so-ominous 'System' we most likely heard about in the movies? We may see this system as cruel and unfathomable, yet this system is meant to be founded on the actions of the public. Foster 'parents' are to be licensed after many courses of training.
Studies have shown that thirty percent of children in foster care remain in care for more than two years. The longer children stay in care the more placements they are likely to experience. More than half the children who enter the foster care system will be moved to a different home in their first six months. It is also found that children care for more than two years will experience about three different placements. Nearly all of the moves have nothing to do with bettering the well being of the child.
Since entered into the system, each and every child begins to question everything. some even question if they actually matter. The amount of children in the foster care system continues to grow. To a child, it seems as if they are the ones to blame; however, that is an issue that couldn't be further from the truth.
In addition to the maltreatment of children in foster care, another issue that arises is that children are moved from one foster care home to another on an average of every six weeks (NCANDS, 2012). With the changes in the caregivers of children in foster care experience, the more likely they are to exhibit oppositional behavior, crying, and clinging. With that being said, in 2012, 23,396 youth aged out of the U.S. foster care system without the emotional and financial support necessary to succeed. Nearly 40% had been homeless or couch surfed, nearly 60% of young men had been convicted of a crime, and only 48% were employed. Seventy-five percent of women and 33% of men receive government benefits to meet basic needs.
Sadly, they usually are more unfortunate than lucky. Treating foster kids poorly and placing them in bad homes just to get your job done is not okay. The foster care system is failing kids badly, because they are more emotional, scared, and most have developmental issues because of what they have been through. According to many authors the statement about foster care systems failing is true.
It appears that even in the foster homes, some kids are still not getting that love and attention from their foster care worker and/or parent. Children in foster homes usually have high rates of physical, developmental and mental health problems (Langford). My cousin suffered with developmental problems and it sad to see that she didn’t get the attention that might have been looking for. A cause of neglect also is because the people in charge of the facilities are sometimes not properly trained when it comes to dealing with foster children.
Overview In the U.S. there are an estimated 427,910 children in foster care on any given day. (3). There are a growing number of youth in the Denver welfare system that are failing to achieve permanency. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the number of teens emancipated from foster care was 20,289 (10).
They often make poor choices that lead to their children going into foster care. Foster care is the temporary placement of a child in a new home. Today, I will be explaining what foster care is, the effects of foster care, and the process of adoption after a while of care. On any given day, there are about 482,000 children in the foster care system. My hope for the future is that people can learn more about foster care and realize how big of a problem this actually is.
The foster care systems has and will always be a part of society. The idea of a foster care system has always been around, even if it was not properly attained in the past. There has also been other methods to try to find placement for children with no or bad homes, for example the orphanage train, living with widows or living house to house in a community. Now in today’s time, we have an organized system of foster care with two different types of homes for children. For example we have group homes, which is a care facility that houses six or more children at a time.
Have you ever thought about how it feels to be ripped out of the only place that you know as home? To get no explanation of why your parents just did not want you anymore? Not a lot of people think about this. Usually, the only people that do think about this is children that are experiencing or have experienced this problem. The children’s rights website stated that, “On any given day, there are nearly 428,000 children in foster care in the United States.”
Foster care rates are blowing through the roof, how do we stop this? Logically, bad parents create harmful situations, so therefore, we create controlled parents. All teenagers and expecting parents should have a semester or an equivalent of 20 lessons on parenting and evaluations. These classes will benefit the small homes individually, and the entire country.
600,000 children in the US go through the foster system each year. Those are children who were neglected, abused, or orphaned.
