Group Homes for Adults with Disabilities Should Be Given a Chance In “Child, Home, Neighborhood, Community, Conscience,” Noam Bramson argues that a middle-class neighborhood in New York City should not oppose the placement of a group home for the mentally disabled in their neighborhood, claiming that their objections were shallow and somewhat paranoid. Group homes provide more benefits to the mentally disabled than hospitals due the homes allowing them to integrate into society and not losing the special care they need. Some members of the community questioned whether or not the group home would pose a safety risk such as presenting a threat of sexual predatory behavior. Another concern that was brought up by the community was about the proximity of the group home to their own and property values. The concerns of the community are valid when it comes to questions about how their property will be affected and safety. There are a lot of arguments about group homes causing a decrease in property values but so far studies have concluded that there is no effect. A study conducted in 1981 concluded that, “Other researchers have reported that property values in communities with group homes had the same increase (or decrease) in market prices as other similar neighborhoods; that the close proximity of neighboring properties to a group home did not significantly affect their market values and that adjacent properties did not experience property value declines.” The close proximity of the houses to the group also has no effect but it would be a normal thing for a community to worry
