Honeybees all over the globe are vanishing. Even Buzz, the Honey Nut Cheerios mascot, is being pulled off of the cereal boxes to raise awareness for this problem (Park). From 1947 to 2008 the number of honeybees living in the United States reduced from 6 million down to 2.4 million. The honeybee population is in grave danger, and if the constant loss of colonies doesn’t stop, then agriculture and everyday life will never be the same. Honeybees are vitally important to the agriculture and food industry in the United States. 75% of all nuts, fruit, and vegetables that are grown in the U.S. are pollinated by bees. They also add $15 billion of value to the American agriculture industry (D’Angelo). This poses a huge problem for us humans because …show more content…

Studies show that 80% of the pollination that happens in a day is because of the honeybees, and 1 colony of bees alone can 300,000,000 flowers daily (“Save The Bees”). That is an unreal amount of production. Honeybees only do what their instincts tell them to and the human race benefits handsomely from their efforts, but the honeybees struggle to survive constantly battling life-threatening chemicals to pollinate plants only to have the honey they produce taken away in the end. In order to protect these bees, some changes are going to have to be made to the current system that has been put in place. First, more government regulations need to be put on the chemicals that can be used in pesticides in order to prevent the harmful effects they have on the bees. Seven of the most commonly produced and used pesticides are highly dangerous to bees (“Save The Bees”). That number has to be reduced if the world wants any chance of preserving the bee population. Second ecological farming techniques need to be more widely practiced. Ecological farming uses no pesticides at all and it allows the bees to pollinate a wide range of different crops efficiently and safely.
