Alexa Kersting was a young fourteen-year-old girl from West Fargo waiting for a life-changing lung transplant. From the moment that the Dominican republic was free from Trujillo’s dictatorship, contrasting viewpoints have come up regarding the sacrifices of the Mirabal sisters. While some argue that the Mirabal sisters sacrifices were not beneficial and worthwhile to the revolution because it resulted in the orphaning of their children and three young lives were lost. Others argue that the Mirabal sisters sacrifices were effective for the revolution since it changed the future of their country. I deem the sisters sacrifices are justifiable because their sacrifices had an important purpose. Personal attitudes towards people with a disability would have strongly influenced the town of Endora’s behaviour to Arnie. Music played in the film was soft and may have been used to make the audience feel sympathy towards Arnie because he has a disability. However, Hallstrom’s analysis of people with autism cannot be completely accurate as in the film it never recognises that people with autism are highly intelligent in the creative field. Recent studies are shown that the way people perceive creativity and people with autism should be reconsidered. He had a hard time identifying social cues and a difficult time speaking, thus he was labeled “weird” and “an outsider”.

A study made by the National Down Syndrome Society (2014) found out that about one in every seven hundred babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome, a chromosomal disorder caused by an error during the cell division. This results in an extra copy of the chromosome 21 which alters the brain and body development. People with Down syndrome are born with intellectual disability, some characteristic facial features and cognitive delays.
