Modern day technology has allowed a free flow of information between the source and the audience. This has, in turn, created an audience with an ever increasing demand for information. Audiences and voting populations, especially regarding political leaders, deserve to know all the information which may influence their vote. However, there is a line between useful information and reality tv-show indulgence. Encroaching upon a political figure’s privacy can have consequences which further affect their performance and put them under strain and allows opponents to make personal attacks which bear no relevance to political affairs. A job has working hours and demands which are expected to be met; beyond that there is no need for the public to have access to information and knowledge that extends into the politician’s private life. Already being under a vast amount of pressure this invasion of their privacy can bring family or personal drama to the surface. An example of this is the Bill Clinton- Monica Lewinsky affair scandal, where president at the time, Bill Clinton, was accused of having an affair with his intern, Monica Lewinsky. They both denied accusations which prompted the impeachment of Bill Clinton despite his success as a president; being responsible for the lowest employment rate in 30 years.
Furthermore, allowing the public access to political leaders’ private information allows for personal attacks which bear no importance to political issues. This is where political opponents and the public use private details to attack a politician’s character. An example of this is with Donald Trump, where the media brought to surface, a clip of him from before the presidential campaigns making a derogatory comment about women.
