“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” (George Santayana). Elie Wiesel, winner of a Nobel Peace Prize in 1986, published the book “Night” in 1956. “Night” is the history of himself and his father trying to survive the Nazi’s wrath. Separated from his mother and siblings, Elie is trying to survive the emotional and physical effects of the holocaust. Today, I will be proving why we should always remember the past. As remembering the past is the key to unlocking the future.
The past can be painful to remember, but it is very important to remember it. Remembering our history can help us from making past mistakes and give us a better future. “He tells the story, out of infinite pain, partly to honor the dead, but also to warn the living - to warn the living that it could happen again and that it must never happen again” (Vi). Elie has witnessed the horrors of the Holocaust. He lost a lot during that time and he know that it can happen again if we are not shown the horrors of the Holocaust. Remembering our past struggles will help us deal with many issues we have yet to face. “Never shall I forget that nocturnal silence which deprived me , for all eternity, of the desire to live. Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to dust. Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never” (32). Elie was starting to lose faith in his religion fast. He was a dedicated Jew before he arrived at Auschwitz, and now the Nazi’s are forcing him to challenge his beliefs. So in summary, Elie faced a lot of struggles that made him question his beliefs, but I believe these struggles to find the truth only made him a stronger
