Free the Orcas Orcas are majestic, beautiful creatures who do not deserve to be confined to tanks that to humans are like bathtubs. The reason orcas are called killer whales is because they are not animals to be messed with. There should be no human interaction that will cause and orca to feel stressed or threatened. Just like humans, orcas have the ability to feel pain when they are separated from their families. Throughout the years aquatic centers have used orcas as entertainment, but in reality orca captivity has taken a toll on the mental and physical health of these animals as well as endangering their human trainers. Jamie Coulson specifies that “Sea World disregards the natural reproductive habits of animals in order to force mother hood on them at young ages” (“5 Disturbing Facts…”). Coulson argues that animal trainers have no professional qualifications in order inseminate an orca because their job is to simply entertain the public and put on a good show. She states that even though female orcas reach sexual maturity until age fifteen, they are forced to breed at eight years old. She points out that Sea World has lied when they said that they do artificial insemination in order to maintain the species alive. She indicates that Sea world sometimes gets sperm form orcas that have died, and in fact this cannot be healthy for the female orcas (“5 Disturbing Facts…”). She states that Sea world puts the orcas under birth control and they control the estrous cycle of the female orcas. If the female orcas refuse to be inseminated by the trainers in the water, they are forcefully taken out and put under no sedation in order to complete the procedure (Coulson). It is no surprise that animals are responsible for who they choose to mate with and that humans should have no say in that process.
