Alejandra Jimenez Ms. Sickler English 10 January 26, 2018 Animal Cruelty Animal Cruelty, also known as animal abuse, is the deliberate act of violence towards animals. It has been reported that animal abuse can lead to domestic abuse. Animal cruelty is linked to an increase in both violence and crime. Animals used for entertainment and gaming purposes are forced to partake in events and actions. The use of animals for gaming and entertainment purposes constitute animal cruelty because it is heartbreaking, unnecessary and dangerous. Initially many would argue that the use of animals for entertainment does not constitute as animal cruelty because they aren't tortured. To illustrate, zoos and animal circuses aren't needed to fulfill someone's happiness. There are many other activates that do not involve anyone suffering or being forced. “ Instead of switching exclusively to human performers—who perform by choice rather than force— the 146-year-old institution continued to bully animals” (DeRose 1). In addition, Fur from animals is a trend in the fashion industry, but animals should not have to suffer to have their fur used to be shown off. “Several years ago, the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously to ban the use of bullhooks on elephants, and the City of West Hollywood banned the sale of fur products” (DeRose 2). “The simple truth is that animals should not be used for human amusement. The process is often unnatural and cruel from start to finish” (DeRose 2). Obviously, the use of animals for entertainment purposes is unnecessary. In particular, animals need to be in their natural environment in order to survive. “In the absence of that, they are permanently stressed to the point where their immune systems are compromised, and they have no defense against the kind of infections that are common to orcas who spend their lives in concrete tanks” (Marino 1). Animals in a human environment can be an endangerment since they are supposed to be adapted to their environment. “Even at the very best of human care and medicine cannot fill the void since, if they are to thrive orcas need ‘orca care’ in an orca environment, not a human one” (Marino 2). Animals used for breeding can be dangerous and result in serious disorders. “Inbreeding increases the likelihood that recessive genes will be passes down to puppies, resulting in a host of serious congenital defects including epilepsy, hypothyroidism and elbow dysplasia, a disease that can cause lameness and arthritis” (Newkirk 2). Based on this research, animals need to be in their natural environment, surviving with their family. Not being snatched from their mothers as a baby. Therefore, the use of animals for gaming and entertainment purposes can be very dangerous and be suffering for the animal. In conclusion, the use of animals for entertainment and gaming constitute as animal cruelty because it is heartbreaking, unnecessary and dangerous.
