In the article “Confronting Inequality” by Paul Krugman argues that income and social inequality damages society and democracy. At the beginning of the article Krugman claims that our country has returned to Gilded Age levels of inequality. The article states that inequality is growing and affecting the other social classes. As a result low and middle class families are struggling to get by. Krugman states that inequality leads to less opportunity.
The current form of teacher accountability, is well known, but has little support. The system we have adapted to, judges our teachers and views them as simple minded. These two scenarios are examples of exclusion, which is the act of denying someone the opportunity to participate in an activity or enter a place. Exclusion may be one of the biggest flaws when it comes to special education in schools. Unlike traditional public schools, charter schools aren’t required to provide resources for special education students.
What is a charter school? Well, charter schools are an emerging alternative to public education and private education since a law was passed back in the early 90s. This past election cycle, the Libertarian Presidential Candidate was a strong proponent of these types of schools with a voucher system. His whole idea was to essentially get rid of the current public school system, mostly the districts and give the parents a certain amount of money and the power to select a school of their choosing. It sounded like an authentic idea, and is honestly what motivated me to actually look into the education system.
Charter schools these past eight years had a countless effect on the education system in a few cities, for example New Orleans, Chicago and New York. As Finn states “charters are the fastest-growing school-choice option in the country” (1). Although these schools are effecting the education system, some parents still are worried about these schools. Some of the worries that parents have about charters schools are if they truly offer an accelerated education for free. When hurricane Katrina hit the city of New Orleans, plenty of public schools were turned into charters schools instead of reopening the public schools that were failing.
“What gives the concept of accountability teeth is a parent’s ability to freely choose a school or schooling type that works for their student” (How Are Private Schools, 2021). This environment allows families to choose what is best for their child. In Georgia, our students are not required to take standardized tests in a private school setting. Charter Schools are publicly funded independent private schools established by teachers, parents, or community groups, under the terms of a charter with a local or national authority. Charter Schools are public schools of choice, meaning that families chose them for their kids. Also teachers who work at a charter school usually fall under more flexible certification requirements than other public school teachers. Charter schools are often similar to magnet schools they often offer special programs such as Math, Engineering, and Environmental science. Also if The Charter school you are trying to enroll in gets too popular they will sometimes use a lottery system which will fill in the vacancies.
While charters schools are a relatively new educational opportunity for children in the United States. And were created on the idea to help improve the public school system and offer parents another public school option. We have been able to see that these charters aren’t doing the job that they were set up to do. From these schools we have seen that they cause more segregation and that they aren’t helping the low-income communities that they are in. The mission of charters is for school leaders to have freedom and do whatever it takes to help a student achieve their academic goals.

A financial deficit exists amongst the families and children in the Clark County School District (2017), but through the use of Title 1 funding economic equality is possible. The Clark County School District has separated the schools in North Las Vegas, Las Vegas, Henderson, and Summerlin into Performance Zones. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act contains policy that ensures students who need extra help learning, get access to free and appropriate public education. In the world today about 264 plus million children are being denied access to free education, according to Global Campaign for Education-civil society movement. Up to 80 percent of the world's out of school 5 to 18 year olds live in the sixty-five countries that a similar, more modern organization, Global Partnership for Education, is associated with. These are the children that are going to be leading and populating their own countries eventually so if have no education, how can they make logical decisions for the benefit of their country and the world? Education is globally recognized as a human right according to a number of international conventions. In all highly developed countries most people would claim education should be free for children worldwide yet a quarter of a billion children are denied education.
Albert Einstein once said, "Everybody is a genius... But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid". Unfortunately, most school systems depict this quote. They judge a significant amount of the population by their ability to answer a few questions. They rate them with letters and numbers, and force students to be represented by these letters and numbers for the rest of their lives.
Education is a huge issue that not only affects kids and their parents, but their community as well. Schools teach young kids to become the next generation of engineers, technicians, and political leaders, working towards creating a better future for their country and their community. Teachers have the unique job of creating the future leaders of the world, and preparing them for both college and life beyond, by putting a special push towards math and science, the so-called “foundation” of our society. The hard truth is, no one can be anything they want to be. Some people are simply not cut out to be engineers, doctors, or psychologists.
