After reading chapter 26 I learned that charter schools should collaborate with public schools to support better education for students. Charters schools enroll a small number of English Learners and students with disabilities, in order for the parents to believe that those are better schools. Charters schools take funding from public schools because parents transfer their children to charter schools. Charters schools also suspend and kick out students who they believe will not help the school get high test scores and thus, not get money. Charter schools treat their students as a business, a way for them to make money and they discriminate those students who they believe won’t make them money.

The pro side of the debate feels that charter schools are necessary to public education. They believe charter schools should be encouraged as an alternative to traditional public education simply because education is not a “one size fits all” (Genma Holmes). Not all children will excel in the same environment due to the mere fact that students all have different needs as individuals. However, what they do not recognize is that it comes at the cost of implementing more economic and racial segregation, widening the gap in student achievement.
It is no secret that the public education system in America has been struggling for quite some time now. I myself have seen the public education system in Florida, and it is failing. There were many different things I disagreed with in my education, and I wished I could have changed it. I get to create a charter school from the ground up. In definition “a charter school is an independently run public school granted greater flexibility in its operations, in return for greater accountability for performance” (cite).
Have you ever been prohibited from an amusement park ride just because you weren’t tall enough? What about not being able to play on a team just because of the way you look? These two scenarios are examples of exclusion, which is the act of denying someone the opportunity to participate in an activity or enter a place. Exclusion may be one of the biggest flaws when it comes to special education in schools. Unlike traditional public schools, charter schools aren’t required to provide resources for special education students.
School choice is the idea that parents should be able to choose which school they want to send their children to, whether they enroll them to private, charter, parochial or virtual schools, or just decide to homeschool them. “Charter schools are our best hope for meaningful change in education. Yet, many parents are leery of charter schools or confused by them.” (“Should all Schools”) Some politicians and teachers believe that school choice takes away money from them since they do use tax dollars.
There is much controversy among the world of education as to whether charter schools are benefiting or hurting students education. Many believe that charter schools are just an attempt to privatize the education system, but it's just not that simple. In our society today the public school system has gotten to a point where the students with a more privileged background get the highest test scores, while students of less privileged backgrounds result in the lowest test scores. Charter schools are a chance for the children who have been abandoned by the public school system due to their socioeconomic background, another chance to get a high education and proceed from high school into a college career. In North Carolina, research finds that charter schools actually increase the achievement gap while at the same time causing more segregation. When analyzing the nation’s charter schools versus public schools, there tends to be a consensus that for the most part, charter schools are performing at about the same level as public schools. Renzulli and Roscigno also point this out in their article, that success stories are usually case by case, not a majority. A major faulty in this is that teachers who may have been extremely successful in educating these students, will be fired with the creation of the new charter school. Once a public school is converted, the charter school has the power to fire any and all existing staff in order to provide an “improved staff”. With states regulating charter schools, each state has its own standards and requirements for charter schools. Therefore, this is why it may be difficult to assess their overall performance. Critics state that “in 2013 charter schools did no better or worse than traditional schools, and the reason for the difference on why they may out preform some schools now is because of the composition of the student body in charter schools (CQ researcher, pg. 220).” It was also stated “charter schools lack the accountability and transparency of traditional schools governed by elected school boards, making it difficult or impossible for taxpayers to determine whether charter schools are using their money wisely (CQ Researcher, pg 220).” A study was conducted and found by “the Center for Popular Democracy, which is a liberal advocacy group in Washington, that $216 million has been lost in waste, fraud or abuse in charter schools since 1994 (CQ Researcher, pg. 220).
Charter Schools are publicly funded independent private schools established by teachers, parents, or community groups, under the terms of a charter with a local or national authority. Charter Schools are public schools of choice, meaning that families chose them for their kids. Also teachers who work at a charter school usually fall under more flexible certification requirements than other public school teachers. Charter schools are often similar to magnet schools they often offer special programs such as Math, Engineering, and Environmental science. Also if The Charter school you are trying to enroll in gets too popular they will sometimes use a lottery system which will fill in the vacancies.
What would the world be like if all of the genetic diseases that drastically effect our world could be targeted and exchanged with genes that don't cause these horrible genetic conditions? That was the idea that cause human gene therapy to evolve. Human gene therapy is, “The insertion of normal DNA directly into cells to correct a genetic defect” (Wiley 2013). The reason this treatment for genetic diseases works, is by replacing a gene that is absent or defective because that is what is responsible for that certain disease. Even though the concept of human gene therapy started in the 1960s and 1970s, this type of treatment is still in its infancy today.
Albert Einstein once said, "Everybody is a genius... But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid". Unfortunately, most school systems depict this quote. They judge a significant amount of the population by their ability to answer a few questions. They rate them with letters and numbers, and force students to be represented by these letters and numbers for the rest of their lives.
