As I was growing up and beginning to form my own naive ideologies, my Italian grandfather would pinch his fingers to the sky and tell me to “get the prosciutto out of your eyes”. I never understood this idiom till I was much older and he had aged past his wisdom to explain it. However, the approach he took to correct my inaccurate views, although based in humor, made me reevaluate my forming worldview. In contemporary society, an unquantifiable population of individuals have formed inaccurate notions of the word Race over time. Through benefit of the doubt, most of these individuals have developed racist viewpoints through institutional philosophies and not an initial personal subscription. Although Race has become a politically acceptable way to overly classify the population of a nation, It maintains to be a socially constructed device to categorize the only species of Homo sapiens into vague groupings determined by varying hue of skin tone, while also implying a sense of superiority. What is often confused is the difference between race and ethnicity. Ethnicity is the grouping of individuals based on culture, specific geographic region, or language. However, even ethnical groupings are flawed when studying genetic diversity. Humans are unable to be categorized into geographic categories with absolute boundaries as the global clusters of populations are highly diversified and complex (AAPA 1996).
