Race and Racism is real. I believe that race was created to separate mankind. Racial hierarchy perceived whites to have the most power while blacks were perceived to be inferior. As a child I have always noticed the different lifestyles and respect given to certain races. I remember being told by my father that being an African American male meant that I would have to work hard in everything that I do. My father went to tell me that my skin color had already put me at a disadvantage. When I continued to question my father he explained to me the cultural construct of a Black man. With a stern voice he said, “You must work twice as hard as any Caucasian male to achieve the same things in life.” I didn’t begin to understand what my father told me until I became a bit older. At the age of 12, I was racially profiled by an officer and was asked about an Arizona can that I threw away. Many people don’t see acts such as crossing the street when a Hispanic or Black male is walking towards them as racist. Desmond and Emirbayer shine light on the issue that “racism is located not only in our intentional thoughts and actions; it also thrives in our unintentional thoughts and habits, as well as in the social institutions in which we all are embedded.” This idea of an unconscious racist proves that racism is real.
