Though Ohio is often considered to be a progressive state in many aspects, we have failed to ensure the safety of our children. Sandy Hook should have been a eye opener that there needs to be a change in school security but change has not come. Ohio needs to proactively protect the children rather than sit back and wait for a emergency to happened. I propose that every school in the State of Ohio be issued trained and armed personnel to protect the school. This person will be stationed on the school campus during all school hours and have a security station to monitor the school. Though this may sound extreme, would it be better to see on the news that a school security guard shot and killed a armed gunmen or that 30+ kids where gunned down as they waited 20 minutes for law enforcement to dispatch a unit? When a statistical analyst from slate.com addressed the Washington Post, he stated “According to the data, there have been a total of 137 fatal school shootings that killed 297 victims since 1980. Elementary schools saw the fewest shootings (17), while high schools saw the most (62). Each decade had more shooting deaths than the previous one” Kirk (2012). There was only one thing that could have had a chance to stop this killings but cannot be present due to zoning restrictions. In a day where national security is threatened not only internationally but domestically, it is essential to protect our nation’s children in a location that should be one of the safest.
