Along with college comes tuition and other college expenses which are not cheap. Since the early 90s, students and parents have been suffering from student loan debt. In fact, according to the United States Department of Education, the average student loan debt has more than doubled from 1990 to 2010 and is continuing to rise (ProCon.org).
The student loan issues are causing huge problems on both students and society it seems clear enough that students are borrowing a lot of student debt, and they are failing on that debt and aren’t capable of paying it back and that is destroying their ability and threatening their ability to access any more credit in the future. Loans allow receiving a college education seem like a smoother process considering that such a hefty amount to pay is divided so that it can be paid for in moderation. Most of my friends who are currently in college have between 5000$-20.000$ in federal and private loans. In many cases, besides for the loans, students have to work and study at the same time, which results in a stressful life for the student. In fact, many students are not able to finish their education because, since they can’t afford it, they have to work over their studies. Out of all the possible reasons to drop out of college, “the No. 1 reason many young adults drop out of college is an inability to juggle school and work” (Johnson). Finishing college is the most decisive forecaster of prosperity in the workforce and the inconsistency in college completion between children of rich and poor families duplicated since the late 1980s (McGlynn 55).
Society often believes college is a necessary experience for a better future, but I argue that the future will not be any better when student debt becomes a part of life for those who follow that mainstream belief. Most parents often dream of the great colleges and universities that their children will get accepted into; however, they fail to think of the cost to attend those institutions. Financial aids! Financial aids! Yes there are financial aids that students can apply to lessen the student debt.
The phrase “education being worth it no matter the cost” has been drilled into students as well as their families. The tuition and cost of college is detrimental to thousands of families across the country and brings student debt to future graduates. Some students have seen their debt climb over $30,000. Friedman writes, “The average student in the Class of 2016 has $37,172 in student loan debt…” (Friedman). With the debts being over the average income for single people households, college has transformed from a benefit to a burden. Young adults not only have to worry about their education but also paying for the next semester or years of college ahead of them.
Kanyakrit Vongkiatkajorn discusses that, “A lot of people talk about student loans with regard to how things are after you finish college, such as the challenges of repaying debt. But they don't talk about the fact that people are so worried about debt even while they're still in college. Watching people go without enough food to eat because they're afraid to take out a loan, or decide to not go abroad or not hang out with friends because they're so worried about what will happen,” (One Bold Way to Blow Up the College Debt Nightmare 1). In other words, we’re blind to the fact that people are so worried about debt, they are afraid to do anything. This proves that loans are leaving people in debt and it can get worse then not taking the loan in the first place.
Students can't pay back loans for many years. Then, as a domino effect, there is more debt. Middle class parents , are caught in a tight web because they can afford college on paper but in reality, have no money left for retirement and receive no financial aid. The cost of college has escalated out of control and the cost of college grows faster than the rate of inflation. In order to cut the costs of my education, I plan to work part time and contribute some of my earnings to my education.
Student loans can be helpful, but when it's time to pay back, it can lead to future mental struggles and be stressful and hold you back from living the life you want to live in the long run. The student loan debt crisis in now only taking a huge toll on the personal lives of many Americans, but on the economy as well.
