Tennessee just filed a bill to ban gender afirming healthcare for children starting this year. Families in Florida are suing the state for banning gender affirming care. This means trans children and trans adult won't be recieving the health care they need to transition. Trans people have existed in worldwide culture since ancient times. In ancient Greece, Phrygia, and Rome, there were galli preists that some believe have been trans women. During the middle ages, accounts in Europe documented transgender people. Hate crimes against trans people involve lots of words but sometimes those words turn into violence which is totally wrong to do. From 2016-2018 trans women participated in a long study of HIV. The secondary data that was analyzed was self-reported experiences with transphobic hate crimes. Some of these hate crimes were robbery, physical assault, sexual assault, and battery with weapon. A large percentage of trans women experienced a hate crime with a significant sociostructural risk by the type of crime. Transphobic people interact with trans men alot differently than they do with trans women. Transphobes believe that trans people "don't exist", they believe trans people are "really" the gender they were assigned at birth. They see trans men as "brainwashed victims of the patriarchy." To these transphobes, trans men are poor innocent deluded women. The approach they take on trans men is insidious, they see trans men as women. There is a sense that trans men are misguided allies and that they're mistaken and need to be welcomed back to womanhood. Some ways are; using someones incorrect pronouns, using a trans persons 'deadname', bullying, violence, workplace discrimination, medical discrimination, and housing discrimination. Some people believe this doesn't affect the person, but in reality transphobia can cause anxiety, depression, isolation, and feeling hopeless. It could also lead to suicide in some cases. Ways you could help to prevent this from happening could be to never ask a trans person about their genitals or if they have or haven't had any gender afirming surgeries, try to avoid backhanded compliments, always ask people for their prefered pronouns instead of assuming based off of their looks, when speaking use gender inclusive language, always stand up for trans people when you hear being transphobic, use a trans person's perfered name and pronouns never ask them about their deadname, and finally support them make them feel safe around you and others. If you or someone you know that is trans is dealing with transphobia here is what you could do. Document what is happening on your phone or a notebook, tell someone you can trust with this type of information, if this is happening in school tell the principal, and if a violent threat is being made go to the police and file a report.
