CHANGING MY COMMUNITY IN A POSITIVE WAY Many people are lucky enough never to experience the hardship and pain of being homeless. Unfortunately for those who do, it really can be a traumatic experience to go through. Being in a homeless shelter without the proper attention and support can have damaging physical and psychological effect on the well-being of such inhabitants. Like most people in the Pine Street Homeless Shelter in Atlanta, Georgia it is becoming a big problem. Having a college degree or anything beyond high school are done to establish a career and a pathway to lucrative employment. Though matter how well managed a homeless shelter is, there are certain quarters of the community who would come up against them. There is always a stigma attached to them by the community they reside in. The best possible way is to create a system to provide them with adequate training and education to create a career lane for gainful employment. I believe the responsibilities not just the government and influential individuals and corporates but to us all to help out. The income also is not steady which can be very frustrating to plan. It makes it extremely difficult for them to save money for basic needs like renting an apartment, clothing and food stockpile. It however necessary for government, NGOs and the community to encourage employment for the older individuals for non-skilled labor. Also keeping these individuals engaged gives them a sense of value thus steering them away from drugs and other negative activities. SETTING UP PROGRAMMES TO STOP DRUG ADDICTION One of the disturbing issues faced by the Pine Street homeless Shelter in Atlanta, Georgia was the alarming rate of drug abuse. This like I mentioned before is caused by depression and idleness faced by these people and engaging them will help. For those who are greatly addicted to drug use already should be placed at rehab centers, constant contact with therapist and frequent monitoring.
