Huck, it’s Ben Rogers, your friend and former member of Tom Sawyer’s gang. Word has been circulating that a young boy has been traveling around the country with a runaway slave, and immediately from the descriptions of the two people I knew that it was you and Jim. I have written this letter to help you decide to either return Jim or help him earn his freedom. However, as awful as this may sound, the right thing to do is return Jim to Miss Watson. First of all Huck, how can you even live with yourself knowing you aided Jim run away from Miss Watson. Miss Watson has been nothing but caring, sensible, and nice to you. She has dealt with all of your pranks and your inability to conform to the demands of society. Now, for all the troubles Miss Watson went through to help you, you pay her back by helping steal her property! In the Southern wilderness there are hundreds of police officers, slave patrols, and every white man has a duty to hunt down runaway slaves. Every minute Jim spends running he would have to worry about being caught. Now, Huck, I know you are thinking that the members of the Underground Railroad will help him, but the reality is that there are only about a dozen members in each state. That’s a dozen people helping him compared to thousands chasing after him. The danger is too much for any man to go through, and it would be unfair to put him through this
