I am writing you to make the argument that the Auditorium Light and Sound Technicians need keys to execute their job efficiently. Currently, we are forced to locate a custodian to have them unlock the auditorium. This takes them away from doing their jobs. Often times we need to call a custodian back because we need something else unlocked. There is also the problematic situation of access control. We are forced to leave the AV Room and Catwalk unlocked which then becomes a security problem. We have had situations where unauthorized persons enter these areas and we did not know. We were only able to find out by coincidence of walking in or by a person reporting it to us. These persons range from parents, teachers, and students who do not belong there. We are unable to monitor these areas during the course of our duties. Leaving these areas unsecured opens up to the possibility of theft of expensive equipment. Leaving these areas unsecured can open up the district to possible liability. There are hazards that may not be immediately apparent. Dr. Tretter-Larkin has requested that we be issued keys on our behalf. Her request was denied by your department. She then requested that we install a keypad for the AV Room and that request was denied. With all of these points in mind, we would urge your department to grant the six Auditorium Light and Sound Technicians access to the keys that we require to continue to successfully execute our duties. If you should still be hesitant to granting just six keys, we could utilize the key checkout procedures on the dates that we require them and checkout one key for the night or a keypad may be installed.
